Doug's Story

After nearly fifty years in various branches of engineering, Doug took early retirement and devoted himself to painting, first in oils and then watercolours, after coming under the influence of Keith Burtenshaw, whose work he admired greatly. He was a member of the London Transport Art Group in the 70's, the West Wickham Art Society in the 80's and was a joint founder of the Addington Art Association in the 90's. He did a Foundation Course in Fine Art in Croydon College in 1998 and was accepted onto a degree course in Painting at the Wimbledon College of Art in 1999.. He did not complete the course. Doug has held many solo shows in Croydon, London and Sutton during the 80's and 90's. The paintings displayed were mostly painted in situ in France, Italy, Greece and of course in the UK. In 2019 he was accepted as a member of the Croydon Art Society and has exhibited with them in Croydon and Dorking. During the recent pandemic, because of the ban on movement and travel, he has concentrated on continuing with his painting in the studio, using photographic resources. Doug is presently returning to "plein aire" painting of landscapes in local beauty spots and is additionally offering to undertake portrait commissions.
